Ace Your Base - Part 1: Cleansers

Marisa Robinson Beauty Blogger Ace Your Base Part 1 Cleansers

They say the key to any fabulously flawless makeup look is a beautiful base. But I'm not just talking about foundation and concealer, I am referring to the important steps that take place before that which include cleansing, toning, masking and moisturising - you guessed it, skincare!

I am a firm believer in that the steps you take to prep your skin will ultimately create the perfect blank canvas for any flawless makeup look your heart desires. Now, I have not been blessed with perfect skin by any means but from a young age I was taught to cleanse, tone, moisturise and NEVER, I repeat NEVER, wear my makeup to bed (gross and nobody likes panda eyes!). This routine has served me well throughout my life and become a very good habit which I think everyone should try and get into as young as they can.

In my 5 part series I am going to share some of my favourite products, how I like to apply them and tips to help you select the right products for you. In this post I am focusing on cleansers and how I like to use them as part of my daily skincare routine.

A huge trend that hit the skincare world last year was 'Double Cleansing'. In this 2 step process you will generally start with an oil based cleanser or balm on dry skin, massaging it in to dissolve and remove any heavy makeup (including eye makeup, mascara, eyeliner) and sunscreen before rinsing off with warm water and going in with a water based cream or foaming cleanser for a deeper clean.

I don't like to double cleanse every day, while it is extremely effective I don't want to strip my skin of its natural oils. But when I do double cleanse it will be in the evening to thoroughly remove any makeup, dust, dirt or oil which may have built up throughout the day.

I like to cleanse my skin morning and night as part of my skincare routine.

In the morning I like to use a water based foam or cream cleanser to wake up the skin and prep it for my skincare and makeup routine. To cleanse I wet my face, dispense a small amount of cleanser onto my hands and gently massage it onto my face and neck in circular motions using my fingertips. Once it is built up into a nice lather I splash my face with warm water to remove any excess and pat my skin dry with a clean towel. While it goes without saying, always ensure you use a clean towel so that you aren't transferring dirt or bacteria onto your freshly cleaned face.
TIP: keep a cleanser in the shower so you always remember to apply it during every wash.

I ALWAYS cleanse my face at the end of each day. Not only is it the perfect way to wash the day away but it removes makeup, dust and pollution that your skin is exposed to in the environment. As I mentioned above I will do a thorough double cleanse but not every night. On the nights that I don't double cleanse I will start by removing my makeup with a makeup remover wipe and then wet my face and go in with a cream or foaming cleaner. For a deeper cleanse without double cleansing I reach for my battery powered cleansing brush. There are a lot of different ones on the market, the most popular being Clarisonic, but I picked this one up from T.K Maxx for only $20!
Then I follow by toning and moisturising which I will cover in my upcoming posts.

Here are some of my favourite cleansers I love to use on the daily and swatches of each so you can see the formula and consistency:

Jurlique Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Cleansing Mousse*

This pump action foaming cleanser is a rich blend of botanical oils including extracts of Jojoba, Grape Seed, Safflower, Rose Hip and Starflower to gently and effectively cleanse and lift away make-up and impurities.

This formula is beautifully fluffy, gentle on my skin while also hydrating. Below are some shots of the formula pumped straight out of the bottle so you can see what it is like.

I love the First Aid Beauty skincare range and their face cleanser is one of my faves! This alcohol and fragrance free cleanser is perfect for sensitive skin and contains aloe to help calm and nourish. It is also a great formula for skin which is prone to redness which mine is so I find it very soothing.

This is a rich cream cleanser which has a lovely pearlescent shine and develops into a nice lather to remove all traces of makeup and grime.

Marisa Robinson Beauty Blogger Ace Your Base Part 1 Cleansers Natural Instinct Cleanser

This all natural face cleanser contains Kakadu Plum which is a powerful antioxidant and Goji Berries which help smooth and improve the tone of your skin. As well as being an extremely effective cleanser it is also very affordable at only $9.95 a tube from your local Priceline, Chemist Warehouse or online from Natural Instinct.

This formula comes out clear and builds into a beautiful foamy lather as you work it into the skin to provide 8 hours of continuous hydration.

This certified organic cleanser not only cleans the skin but also exfoliates with its multi-fruit complex and smells absolutely incredible!

It's amazing scent is thanks to the beautiful signature superfood blend of blueberry extract, grape skin extract and acai berry oil which work together to help prevent damage caused by the sun, pollution and environmental stresses and to smooth the skin and reduce wrinkles by promoting collagen production.

Two pumps is all you need to completely cleanse the face and neck and while it dispenses as a purple gel, once you massage it onto the skin it turns into a thick, creamy lather which is gentle and leaves the skin feeling fresh and clean.

Consider your skin type - do you have normal, dry, oily or combination skin? Look for a cleanser which suits your skin type so that it is getting the nutrients and essential oils that it needs.

Is your skin sensitive? A natural formula free of parabens and nasties might suit you best.

Do you only like to use only natural and organic skincare products? Look for genuine products which contain active organic ingredients that have been certified by organic organisations and bodies. Your local health food store can often be a good place to start.

Also take note of the expiration date of your cleansers. You will find this on the back of the packaging within a little picture of a jar. usually 6, 12, 18 or 24 months. Just like makeup, your skincare will be most effective when it is used within its use by date.

What is your favourite cleanser and are you a fan of the double cleansing trend?

Stay tuned for part 2 of 'Ace Your Base' where I share my favourite toners.
