Ace Your Base - Part 2: Toners
The second step in my skincare routine is Toning.
After I have cleansed my skin (you can check out part 1 for my favourite cleansers here), I always go in with a toning lotion or toning pads to remove any excess oil, dirt or cleanser from my face and neck. Not only does it ensure your my face and neck is cleaned thoroughly but it helps to balance and hydrate the skin, reduce oiliness and minimise the appearance of pores.
In this post I will share my toning routine, a key ingredient which has taken the beauty world by storm and some of my favourite toners.
MY TONING ROUTINE
My toning routine is pretty straight forward and takes less than a minute to do as part of my daily skincare regime:
1. Once you have cleansed your face, take your favourite toning lotion and dispense 4-5 drops onto a clean cotton pad/ball.
2. Starting from the centre of the face in an outwards motion, wipe the cotton pad over your face and neck. You will instantly see any dirt and grime on the cotton pad. When this happens I turn the pad over or grab a new one so the dirty cotton pad isn't being placed on my clean face.
3. Once done allow your face to air-dry before following with your favourite moisturiser or serum which I will cover in an upcoming post. Don't dry your face with a towel or wash it with water, just allow the toner to absorb naturally into the skin.
If you're using toning pads you will save yourself even more time as you simply take them from the jar and wipe them over your face and neck.
WHAT IS GLYCOLIC ACID?
You have probably heard this word buzzing around lately and noticed it contained in more and more skincare products. Glycolic Acid is a type of AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) naturally derived from sugar cane and is made up of small molecules which enables it to easily penetrate into the skin.
When used in skincare, Glycolic Acid safely exfoliates and removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin revealing fresh, smoother looking skin. You apply it the same way as you would a toner but the difference is you may feel a tingling sensation for a few seconds after application. This is completely normal and is a result of the low pH levels in the Glycolic Acid. The pH levels and concentration of Glycolic Acid can differ between products but the lower the pH levels and concentration the more effective it is.
The main benefits of using Glycolic Acid in a toner is that it helps to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells, hydrate, firms and can reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It can also minimise pores and help boost collagen production for plumper and softer looking skin.
One thing to always remember is that Glycolic Acid makes the skin more sensitive so it is very important to always apply a sunscreen afterwards to avoid any skin damage.
MY FAVOURITE TONING LOTIONS
Liquid Gold by name and nature, this award-winning concentrated lotion needs no introduction! This cult classic thoroughly cleanses and exfoliates my skin thanks to the hero ingredient, Glycolic Acid. After applying this treatment to my face, neck and décolletage my skin tingles for a few seconds as it deeply penetrates but the results are fabulous! My skin always feels fresh, revitalised and smooth as it removes all dead skin cells and while it isn't drying it does help to balance my skin and eliminate any oiliness through my T-Zone. I have almost hit empty on this and when I am I can't wait to pick up the Liquid Gold Rose to try which is infused with rose, lotus and orchid petal extracts.
If you have combination or dry skin you will love the Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Lotion. I use this toner after the Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Cream and my skin feels fabulous! Enriched with Bladderwrack Extract, Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel which is renown for it's cleansing and smoothing properties, it hydrates my skin and creates a clearer complexion. The generous sized 236ml bottle is only $22 from Mecca which is great value for this amazing product.
When I want to hydrate my skin after cleansing I always reach for my Jurlique Activating Water Essence. Not only does it smell incredible but the beautiful blend of botanicals and organically grown marshmallow root extract helps to soften and revitalise my skin. To use you simply pour a few drops into the palm of your hand and press into the skin for an instant boost of hydration.
Ideal for normal and combination skin types, the NIVEA Daily Essentials Refreshing Toner is formulated with Vitamin E for nourishment and Hydra IQ technology for hydration. Easily accessible from your local supermarket or chemist, this is nice and gentle on my skin while still removing all traces of oil and dirt.
The AVON NutraEffects Mattifying Toner is a toner with a difference. While it has all the properties of a hydrating and purifying toner, it leaves the skin with a matte look, perfect for when I am wanting to create a matte base for my makeup look. You simply shake the bottle to activate and apply to the skin using a cotton pad. It is great to use when I am oily through my T-Zone and is soap-free so it doesn't dry out my skin.
These handy pads are great for travelling and make toning a breeze!
The First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads are perfect for all skin types and are a quick and effective way to exfoliate, tone and brighten the skin. Each tub contains 60 pads and contains with Glycolic and Lactic Acids to exfoliate the skin and brighten while the Cucumber and Indian Gooseberry extract helps to tone the skin. I love these wipes, they are so easy to use, perfect for on the go and leave my skin feeling smooth and soft.
TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT TONER FOR YOU
Look for a toner to suit your skin type. Whether you have normal, oily, combination or dry skin there will be a toner to suit you!
If you have dry skin avoid using toners with alcohol and soap in them as they will dry out your skin even more!
