Swatch Session // M.A.C Cosmetics Star Trek Collection

Marisa Robinson Makeup Artist MAC Cosmetics Star Trek Collection

To celebrate the release of Star Trek Beyond, M.A.C Cosmetics have created a limited edition makeup collection and it is BEYOND (pun intended)!

Now for those who know me this post may seem a little out of left field. Not the makeup swatch part but the part about Star Trek. I'm not really a fan of sci-fi, in fact until 3 days ago I had never watched Star Trek and the only references I knew came from The Big Bang Theory. But thanks to the team at M.A.C Cosmetics I got to preview the film and I was pleasantly surprised at how good  it was, especially the special effects! Throughout the whole movie I was in awe of the makeup and prosthetics and could only imagine the amount of time, talent and work that went into transforming each character.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on some production notes which gives us an inside into the makeup and special effects:

In addition to Jaylah and Krall, the make-up and costume departments worked in tandem to create over 50 unique alien races for the film, more than any previous Star Trek outing. “We have more aliens in this film than the first two combined,” make-up designer and make-up effects supervisor Joel Harlow reveals. “At one point, we counted up all the aliens and saw we had about 48. Then we thought, it’s the 50th Anniversary, let’s do at least 50. I think we topped out at 53 unique races, and then multiples of those, so we’ve got some room to play.”

A small army of make-up artists, sculptors, painters, mold technicians and silicone experts worked around the clock, seven days a week in workshops in Burbank, Vancouver and Dubai. “Nobody can do this work on their own,” says Harlow. “Thankfully, I have much more skilled and talented people working with me.”

Harlow explains that the characterization of each alien often begins in the make-up chair. “The prosthetics are designed with movement in mind. We’ll add a piece at a time, so the actor can gage their full range of movement. Once that’s established, you have to think about the complete look. They’re not going to walk like us; they’re not going to act like us. It’s a lot to remember, but every actor we’ve had in the trailer has been completely enthusiastic and committed. They’ve really hit it out of the park.”

Sorry I will stop geeking out now and get down to what you're really here for - the makeup collection!

Marisa Robinson Makeup Artist MAC Cosmetics Star Trek Collection

M.A.C Cosmetics has created a 25 piece Star Trek collection with each product named after a Star Trek reference (most of which I didn't understand haha) such as 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', 'To Boldly Go' and 'Khaaannn!'.

The collection contains limited edition lipsticks, lip glasses, eye shadows, lashes, nail lacquers and more, ranging from $20AUD to $51AUD, all housed in exclusive M.A.C x Star Trek packaging.

Below I have swatched some of the new products to show you the colour range and pigmentation in both artificial and natural light.

PRESSED PIGMENT EYE SHADOWS

Above I have swatched two shades of the Pressed Pigment Eye Shadows: 'Bird of Prey' which is a dark olive green pearl with sparkle (frost) and 'To Boldly Go' which is a reddish copper pearl with sparkle (frost). The formula is soft, creamy and these swatches were created using my finger tip but the shades are definitely buildable for a more intense finish.

These shadows will retail for $44AUD each.

LIPSTICK AND LIP GLASS

I am all about gold makeup so as soon as I opened 'The Enemy Within' I was obsessed! One swipe and you are greeted by a beautiful, neutral gold shimmer (frost), perfect for a glam makeup look. 'Kling-It-On' creates a really unique finish: a deep purple with fine pink glitter throughout. I wouldn't usually be drawn to a colour like this but the more I played with it the more it grew on me.

But it was the lip glass in 'Khaaannn!' that won me over! This beautiful berry formula with red reflect is amazing and when worn solo gives the lips a subtle wash of colour with a pretty shine. The formula isn't too sticky and sits really nicely on the lips.

But it is when 'Khaaannn!' is teamed with the 'Kling-It-On' lipstick that the magic really happens! I applied the lipstick first and then the lip glass over the top and in my opinion this combination gives both products so much life! The glitter sheen is intensified and the gloss finish over the lipstick creates a super glam lip look.

The lipsticks will retail for $40AUD each and the lip glass for $39AUD each.

I can't wait for the collection to be released and I am especially excited to try the 'Trip The Light Fantastic Powders' which you can see in the picture from M.A.C Cosmetics Senior Artist, Regan Rabanal below. They will retail for $51AUD each and come in three amazing shades:
Luna Luster: sheer wash of soft rose shimmer
Strange New Worlds: sheer wash of golden coral pearl
Highly Illogical: sheer wash of golden plum with fine pearl
