The Evolution of My Brows
I know I am not the only one who has had a bad brow day. There was over-plucking, not enough plucking, too thin, too thick and just plain non existent! But thankfully with so many amazing brow products on the market we can get our brows on fleek every day of the week!
In this post I am going to go on a trip down memory lane. I will share some of my best and worst brow moments from the last 3 years - this is the time I feel my brows have evolved the most and when I actually put more effort into them - and give you some tips on how I like to create my favourite brow looks. A simple scroll through my Facebook profile photos saw the evolution of my brows (and hair colours) and there were some very good and very bad brow moments, but thankfully they have gotten better over the years.
THE EVOLUTION OF MY BROWS
Below I share some of my most memorable brow moments, good and bad, and critique each one!
SO WHAT HAS CHANGED?
There have definitely been some noticeable changes in my brows over the years.
Firstly the shape, I have really experimented with the shape of my brows from a softer arch to a more angular finish. Then there is the thickness. As you can see when I started I was over filling them but over time I discovered the shape and thickness which complemented by eye and face shape. The colour also changed, mainly due to what colour my hair was at the time but I think I have finally found the perfect brow shade for me.
I truly believe practice does make perfect. Try different products, techniques and styles until you find the one which works best for you. Watch YouTube tutorials and videos for tips and tricks or visit your nearest Benefit Brow Bar and get them professionally shaped to get you started. I started off using brow powders and an angle brush as I found it was easier for me to control and there was a little more room for error. But then as I got more confident I started experimenting with pencils and pomades which at first were a little intimidating but once I got the hang of them it totally changed my brow game.
Other than practice, the products I use have definitely made a big difference in my brow game. Below I share some of the Benefit Cosmetics Brow products I love to use for a natural and glam brow looks.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE FOR NATURAL BROWS
When I want a more natural brow look I like to opt for powders. I just feel like they give a softer finish and blend out beautifully. My favourite is the Benefit Cosmetics Brow Zings Eyebrow Shaping Kit which contains a shadow and wax that I like to apply with the included brush. To apply I dip the brush into the powder, tap off any excess and work it through my brows to fill and create the shape I desire. I love that this compact has everything you need for perfectly groomed brows and the shadow is perfectly pigmented and buildable so you can achieve the look you desire. I then take a spoolie brush to run through them to blend before setting them in place with the Benefit Cosmetics Ready, Set, Brow! clear brow gel.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE FOR INSTA BROWS
When I want my brows on point I love using a brow pencil or pomade. Now, I will be the first to admit I resisted using pomades for quite awhile. I found them intimidating and they didn't leave much room for error. But like they say practice makes perfect and I can now happily say I have my pomade game down! My favourite brow pencils would have to be the Benefit Cosmetics Precisely My Brow Pencil which helps to feather hair like strokes and create a defined tail. This is a dual ended mechanical pencil with a spoolie on one end and the twist up pencil on the other. The formula comes in 6 shades and is also waterproof for a long lasting finish! I then finish off with the Benefit Cosmetics Ready, Set Brow! clear brow gel to lock my natural brow hairs in place.
When it comes to pomades I love the Benefit Cosmetics Ka-Brow! Eyebrow Cream-Gel Colour. Not only does it come with a built in angle brush but the formula is buildable so it is a little easier to work with. I take some on the end of my angle brush and then trace out the brows and fill them in for a glam, more insta-worthy finish. I love that this drys to a matte finish and lasts all day. To finish off the look I run the Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Voluminizing Brow Gel through them to set any natural hairs in place and add some volume thanks to the tiny microfibres that adhere to skin and hairs.
Remember the 3 point rule: start, arch, tail. Map your brows out before you start filling them in to create the shape and look to complement your eye and face shape.
I am a huge fan of the Benefit Cosmetics brow range and they definitely have a product to suit every brow! When shopping the range and selecting your shade a rule to remember is that the even numbers (2, 4, 6) are cool tones while the odd numbers (1, 3, 5) are warm tones.
Unlike some of my brow mishaps you should always see your eyes before your brows. So if they are a little too dark or intense use other products to sculpt and highlight or opt for a lighter shade.
Regular waxing and maintenance by a professional will help keep your brows on fleek and also create a guide for you to work with. Book an appointment at your nearest Benefit Cosmetics Brow Bar and let one of their qualified and skilled team members give you a Bene-Brows transformation!
